Leverage streetlight photo-controlled luminaires to power remote wireless equipment. Different options exist depending on the power available from the streetlight or lighting pole, power requirements of the wireless equipment, and whether dimming control needs to pass through the power tap adapter.
Streetlight power tap adapters work with any luminaire that utilizes a photocontrol and locking type receptacle. They install between the photocontrol or shorting cap and the receptacle to provide power to attached equipment. This combined NEMA socket and plug fits existing NEMA sockets. They can also be used with voltage regulators (e.g. to provide a specified DC voltage) and other outdoor battery backup UPS systems.
Power tap adapters are usually available without connector (bare wire to radio equipment power interface), with other connector types, different cable length, and different DC/AC/POE outputs.

Remote Power for Remote Wireless
This is ideal for remote sites with no AC power. This can include a Wireless WAN site for remote CCTV monitoring or a wireless internet project.
Implementing a solar powered site with battery bank that will power equipment, consider the following:
- Calculating typical power dissipated by your WWAN; Remote Surveillance equipment
- Formulating realistic goals for alternative energy and backup battery capacity
- Selection of complete solar system components including type of enclosure to house wireless radio equipment
- Selection of mounting styles & location
Depending on the solar site, load requirement will vary. Higher load capacity will allow for increased usage duty cycle, increased radio throughput/transmit power to accommodate devices added on the network, increased support for more no-sun days, and account for environmental conditions that lead to increased use of heater/blower. There are two ways to increase load support of a solar site:
- Increase the number of solar array modules in parallel with existing string. With existing series mounted modules with output of 6A, adding another series mounted modules in parallel with the existing will give a total of 12A.
- Adding a two series wired batteries in parallel with an existing two series wired combination.

Wireless devices used in communication can be damaged by lightning strikes or electrostatic discharge. Lightning protectors and surge protectors are used to ground the harmful effects of lightning spikes to prevent damage and increase lifespan of these equipment.
The protectors work by diverting surges from the electronic devices to the ground. Some electronic devices have ESD protection built-in. However, adding the external spike/surge protection to the installation provides an additional layer of protection to the network.
Lightning and surge protection devices have specific surge thresholds that they can handle. This can either be max surge voltage or maximum surge current that can be discharged. Other parameters that characterize these protection devices are insulation resistance, capacitance, response time and whether they pass or block DC voltages. Coaxial protection devices also have a specific frequency range of operation which are specific to particular wireless equipment.
